My name is Matt.
You know, its still hard to believe that I used to hang wallpaper everyday for over 15 years. Actually I started working with my dad in the summer months when school was out and on vacation holidays from the time I was 12, so that makes it more like 20 years.
However, I now make my living as an internet marketer through the use of affiliate programs and have for the past several years now. And even though it seems second nature to me now, when I first started I dare say that I probably didn't know as much as you do about a computer, much less anything concerning internet marketing.
I didn't even know where to start.
For instance, choosing a product, building a website, writing content for the website, creating a keyword list, knowing the right software to use, how to promote your website or business... and on and on it goes.
But there is an easier way;
Anyway, after graduating high school I went to work with my dad full time, and at age 24 I decided to buy the business from him. I did pretty well, at least to me it was good because that was the best money I had ever made up until that time.
I for sure wasn't getting rich or anything like that, but I was doing ok. I had a nice small house for my wife (Revonda), myself, and our two children, and we were able to do most of the things that we wanted, so we did ok.
However, the drawback was that my business included no one but myself. So if I didn't work, I didn't make any money. If I took a vacation, I didn't make any money. If I was sick, I didn't make any money.
You get the idea.
So let's jump ahead into the future 8 years to age 33. Revonda and I now had five children but my income hadn't hardly increased at all. I still lived in the same small house and still did the same thing everyday.
I would get up around 6:30 AM every morning, get to work by 7:30 or 8:00, work until lunch and go eat, go back and work until 4:00, 5:00, 6:00 PM or whenever and go home. I did that day after day, week after week, year after year.
I longed for more time with my family and I wanted to be able to give them more. But if I took the time off as I said before, I didn't make any money.
I felt trapped!
I remember the times that I would be going to work and thinking how pretty of a day it was and how nice it would be to take the day off. But I couldn't, because I knew if I did I wouldn't have the money that I needed.
Now I don't want to just complain because I admit that I still had it pretty good. I made decent money, I was my own boss and made my own hours and for many people that would be a dream come true. But I knew there had to be more.
So I tried other businesses...
Over the years I had tried starting other
businesses. I laid ceramic tile, I painted, sheetrock,
I even studied and traded options in
the stock market.
I did all I could to try and make more money just to pay the bills it seemed. I knew there had to be more. I wanted more for my family.
For example, my two oldest boys, Justin and Addison, always wanted dirt bikes so my dad bought them their first bikes when they were 5 and 7. But as kids do, they quickly out grew them as well as trashed them because they jumped them, crashed them, broke the frames, etc, etc, etc... But I didn't have enough money to buy them another one.
So to compensate I got a newspaper route to make some extra money. I got up every morning, 7 days a week at 3:00 AM and delivered newspapers until about 5:30 AM. This was in addition to hanging wallpaper.
And even though this was very tiring, within in a few months I was able to buy them both another dirt bike. They weren't new dirt bikes, they were used, but the boys were happy.
Man, surprising them with those bikes and seeing the smiles on their faces felt so gooooood!
Also, at that time my oldest daughter, Myranda loved cheerleading and you know how it is with sports, the teams are always asking for more money for uniforms, pictures or something. However one good thing were that my other two children weren't costing me much money because they were still so small...
But in any case I felt like I was going under.
How was I going to be able to send them all to college? My oldest two boys wanted to race motocross... that could never happen... not with the money that I made. That's the kind of things that I thought about.
I was COMPLETELY FRUSTRATED!
I told Revonda more than
once that I felt like I worked all
week just to fall behind
more and more.
We didn't spend extra money. We hardly out out. Revonda didn't shop... and believe me... she loves to shop.
My biggest prayer was I wanted to be debt free. I mean... who doesn't want that? But included in that prayer was I wanted to have more than enough for me and my family and to help others in need. I always hated to see others in need financially and for me not to be able to help them simply because I just didn't have the finances to do so.
Well, Revonda helped me run the paper route for the last 6 months or so that I ran it. And it really was helping because we got a lot of bills caught up, but 3:00 AM was getting really old.
We had kept the paper route for a year and a half before I just felt like I had just had enough of it. So I gave my 30 days notice and finished right before thanksgiving in November of 2002.
I remember, Revonda kept asking me what were we going to do because the extra income was nice and helpful. So two days after quitting the paper route I told her that I would go back and ask if we could keep it, but I also said that if the boss said no for any reason, then there was something better waiting for us.
Well as you may have guessed, he told me that he had already promised the route to someone else. So I went home and said, "Something better is on the way." However, inside I was a little scared.
But a few weeks later, an old friend of mine, Rusty, which I hadn't seen in maybe 15 years stopped by. I still remember it like it was yesterday. It was right at Christmas when he came. He brought the kids presents and we talked for a while, and during our conversation he talked a little bit about his new internet marketing business.
He then told me that he had not told, nor would he tell anyone how he did it. But for some reason he said that he would show ME everything if I would come to his home for a few days where he could explain it all to me.
Now keep in mind that the only thing
I knew howto do with a computer was play
cards and balance the checkbook. My kids knew
more about a computer than I did, and
my oldest son was only eleven.
That was December 2002 when Rusty dropped by. I talked to Revonda about it and called him back a couple of days later and made plans to go to his home in Nashville TN for a few days and learn this.
I figured... "Why not?" I had tried everything else and this just may be the one.
Also, my wallpaper business was always slow after Christmas and most of January, and that year was no exception.
So January 1, 2003 I went to Nashville, hoping for something better. There Rusty introduced me to internet marketing with affiliate programs. He taught me how to use Microsoft Frontpage to build a webpage, how to market the affiliate programs by finding keywords and using search engines like Yahoo, Google, MSN and others to market my product.
I stayed at his home for three days and took a lot of notes... I mean a LOT of notes.
Everything I did I wrote in a notebook so that when I got back home in South Carolina, approximately 5 hours away, I could look back at my notes and try to get this accomplished.
When I got back home I immediately went to work. My first webpage took me all day from probably 7 in the morning to 7 or 8 at night to complete. But man I was thrilled. And now that I look back, that was one ugly webpage.
But hey, it worked.
I actually made some sales with it. So that got me even more excited!
I was really starting to see the potential of this business. So I would go hang wallpaper all day, come home around 4 to 6 PM, and immediately start working on my new internet business. I was so driven that many times I would work up until midnight or so.
My goal was to quit
hanging wallpaper completely
by the beginning of the 2004,
1 year from when I started.
I even wrote it down on a piece of paper and had it in my wallet. Everyday I would read it out loud to myself at least once or more. Of course I didn't have to read it after a while because I had it memorized. But I would always say it out loud at least once or more a day.
Well to summarize this story, in Mid December 2003, just short of a year, I quit hanging wallpaper and have never missed it one bit.
Now lets jump forward into the future once again. I am now 39 years old and make WAY MORE money than I ever did as a wallpaper hanger.
- Moreover, when I want to take the day off - I still make money.
- When I go on vacation - I still make money.
- If I'm sick and don't work - I still make money.
- I even make money while I'm asleep.
As a matter of fact... one of the first things that I do when I wake up, is to check my email and revenue reports just to see how many sales I made during the night.
As far as my children... my two oldest boys (Justin and Addison) are getting to achieve their dreams of racing motocross and have done so for the past several years now because I can afford it. As a matter of fact they both have new dirt bikes, their own practice track, an 8x20 trailer for hauling their dirt bikes, and all the necessities that it takes to do this kind of thing.
My other boy, (Christian), could care less about sports or motorcycles, but he loves golf carts and four wheelers. So he has a golf cart and a four wheeler that he rides nearly everyday.
My two girls, (Myranda and Madelyn) aren't involved in anything at the moment. But when they were into the cheering we were able to provide them with private lessons as well as the normal cheerleading sessions with their team. However, I'm sure they will be coming up with something they want to do soon enough.
And I can't tell you how wonderful it feels to be able to just take the day off because I want to. Many times in the summer my kids may ask me to go swimming, so I just stop working and go swimming all day.
For years we have always went on vacation with my parents and my sister and her family. But at times, I have also taken just my family on additional vacations so we could just have our own vacation away from every one else. And oh yeah, our house is plenty big enough for the seven of us. The list just goes on and on.
Now I tell you my life story not to
brag, but so that you can see that I'm just
an everyday guy likemost of you. I'm also not
a computer genius, actually when I began I
knew ALMOST NOTHING about
computers.
But what I am showing you here is, if I can do it - THEN YOU CAN TOO!
